Latest Version 1.32.19Charities in the Tasmanian capital, Hobart, are concerned about growing levels of homelessness in a city that has experienced a significant increase in homelessness over the past 12 months, according to new figures released by the Tasmanian Public Health Community-Based Support Network (PHCB) on Thursday.
Homelessness figures within Hobart have climbed to a ten year high, according to Hobart City Council local area manager Murray Pedler.
“Hobart has the highest rate of homelessness in the state,” Mr Pedler said.
“Before anyone comes down and thinks it’s just Hobart, it’s actually across all of the metropolitan areas in the state.”
Mr Pedler said the figures showed six families were in emergency accommodation at the moment, while another 20 have been identified as being in need of support.
“We’ve got over 100 people experiencing homelessness in the metropolitan area,” Mr Pedler said.
“With the outdoor temperatures getting colder here, people are suffering.”
In 2016, Hobart recorded 59 instances of homelessness, an increase of 32 cases from the previous year.
However, figures reported by the PHCB show 45 cases of homelessness were recorded in January of this year.
“That’s the highest level since 2012, so we think it’s a pretty clear indicator that something has to be done to try
